Predator Free Environs in Cambridge, New Zealand
Since 2017, Predator Free Cambridge (PFC) has been working to restore local Cambridge ecosystems by trapping and reducing populations of rats, mice, possums, and stoats in our green spaces. Over the past eight years, the dedicated PFC community has established 23 traplines, maintained by 70 passionate volunteers, boosting the survival of the local native wildlife.
Predator control work strengthens biodiversity corridors between Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari and the town. The potential for birdlife to spill into our streets, gardens, and parks is immense, and truly exciting.
The next phase is to encourage back yard trapping. There are loads of benefits. It can help get rid of rats from compost bins, saves roses and fruit trees from possums, but most importantly it can make our backyard gardens a safe place for our unique native wildlife to live and feed.
It can be a little daunting dealing with the dead rodent once caught, but with a team of volunteers ready to deal with the trap’s catch and reset it for more results, we hope to establish sufficient traps in our residential areas to make a significant difference in predator numbers.
Aroha Cambridge can help with the purchase or borrowing of traps and can provide all the information and support needed to put your trap to good use.
If you are keen to be part of this initiative then we would love to hear from you!
