Weed and Release - Te Puna Marama Moonspring - 18th October

Weed and Release - Te Puna Marama Moonspring - 18th October

9:00am 18th October 2026 to 10:30am 18th October 2026

Te Puna Marama below Resthaven Village Centre, off Vogel Street

Join us for a morning of fresh air, good company and a little hands-on care for our growing seedlings.

We are heading back to Te Puna Marama Moonspring to give our plants a helping hand as spring gets underway.  Whether you joined us before for planting, are one of our regular volunteers or would just like to get involved, we would love to have you join us.

When: Sunday 18 October 2026
Time: 9:00am–10:30am
Where: Moonspring Extension area, Te Puna Marama Moonspring, off Vogel Street, Cambridge.

You’ll find us onsite along the public path that runs from Resthaven Village Centre down towards the river.

What is a weed and release?

It’s all about giving our young plants room to grow.  We’ll be clearing weeds and grass from around the seedlings so they have better access to sunlight, water and nutrients, without being crowded out.

Planting is just the beginning, and this ongoing care is an important part of helping our restoration work thrive, especially now that spring is here.

Please see the attached document at the bottom of this page for further details to support your understanding on what it means to release plants.

Come along and lend a hand

You don’t need to be an experienced gardener to get involved.  We’ll help you identify what needs to stay and what can go, and show you how to clear around the seedlings carefully.

Come for the full session or lend a hand for whatever time you can spare.  Every little bit helps, and there is always time for a chat along the way.

What to bring on the day:

  • Closed-toe shoes, sturdy boots or gumboots.

  • Gardening gloves.

  • Clothing suitable for the weather, including a hat if the suns out.

  • A hi-vis vest if you have one.

  • A bottle of water.

  • Any snacks you might need to keep you going.

  • Small gardening hand tools, such as a hand fork/weeding tool, clippers/hedge trimmers if you have them.

Please dress for working outdoors and take care on any uneven or slippery ground.

Join us for a BBQ afterwards!

Once we have finished tending to the seedlings, we will head along to our Aroha Cambridge Open Shed Morning at the AC Base, 51 Thornton Road for a sausage sizzle and a catch-up with the team.  The Open Shed Morning runs from 9:30am to 12 noon, so there will be plenty of time to pop over after our weed and release session.

Please RSVP to help us plan for a great day!

If you have any questions, please get in touch at connect@arohacambridge.nz.

We look forward to seeing you there and giving our little plants some love
